Some points to remember while formatting

1/-       The components

If you are sure about what the elements of a basic research paper are, you are sure to be able to format the whole thing well. Not all research paper formats are the same; however, by and large, these elements appear, albeit under different heads, in most papers. They are –

Title page

Abstract (if necessary)

Introduction (this is where one writes the thesis statement)

Developmental context or background info or rationale

Methodology or research methods

Main body or discussion or core research area

Analysis or testing or critical/analytical application

Results or assessments

Evaluations and recommendations

Appendix (if any)

If your paper has the elements or components that are mentioned above, you can be confident that you are on the right track. You have nothing to fear and your guide is not going to breathe down your neck.

2/-       Other general formatting issues

There are few other issues that you also need to remember when you have a research paper format to worry about. These are as follows

a/         Spacing and fonts

Most research papers are written in double line spacing, using fonts that are clear and easy to understand. Fancy-looking fonts are going to make your instructor wonder whether he is looking at a lengthy party invitation or a dissertation; so don’t try them.

b/         Margins, headers and footers

Most guides ask you to leave a broader margin on the left hand side of the page so that you have enough space for binding the thesis or paper in some way. Some others ask you to maintain a margin of one inch on all four sides. Headers usually contain the page number; in some cases the surname of the research scholar. If the page number is not mentioned at the top, it forms part of the footer.

c/         End notes and footnotes
