The references section of a research paper is like the garnishing on a well prepared dish. When you make use of ideas and statements of other authors, it is necessary to give them due credit in your research paper references section. Therefore, it is important for you learn how to use references in your research paper.

References for research papers are usually done according to a particular style of citation – MLA and APA are the most frequently used. Of course, there are a couple of other styles that are not as popular as these two. They are Chicago, Harvard and Turabian. The MLA style

The Modern Language Association has laid down a few rules regarding citations in research papers, essays and dissertations. Some of these rules are given below for your easy understanding. Remember that while writing research paper references rules are to be followed strictly depending on the citation style.

1/-  Let us imagine that you are bringing in the words of John Smith into your paper. You can begin the sentence with the words; Smith says … The sentence should be followed by the page number from the author’s book, in brackets. If you do not mention the name of the author at the beginning of the sentence, you can put the name of the author and the relevant page number in brackets at the end of the sentence.

2/-  All research paper citations are to be listed at the end of the paper in a separate section. This section is to be titled ‘Works Cited.’ Here the list of the books and other works cited need to appear in alphabetical order of author names.

3/-  While citing a book written by a single author make sure you follow the MLA guidelines on research paper citations. The second or the surname of the author should precede his Christian name. This is followed by the title and the subtitle of the book. This should either be written in italics or it can be underlined. Next is the place of publication, the name of the publisher and then the date of publication.

The three points mentioned above are just part of the rules regarding MLA citations. It would be a lot easier if you could go through our MLA research paper samples to get a better idea of what the ‘Works Cited’ page looks like.
